Abstract

Abstract: Objective: To describe the characteristics of cases of death by suicide in the municipalities that make up the XI Health Region of the state of Pernambuco, in the period between 2011 and 2020. Method: Quantitative, descriptive and retrospective documentary research, with secondary data extracted from the Information System on Mortality published by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System of the Ministry of Health, tracing an epidemiological profile through sociodemographic variables and mortality rate. Results: In the studied period, there were 165 deaths by suicide in the micro-region, which corresponded to an average rate of 7 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, indicating mortality above the compared averages. A suicidal profile was identified, mostly male, aged between 15 and 34 years old, single, mixed race/color, rural worker, few years of schooling, provoked at home and hanging as the most used method. Conclusion: A regional public health problem with worrying rates is inferred. This opens up the possibility of tracking and analyzing the population prone to suicide and combating their vulnerabilities, consequently helping to improve primary care and regional mental health care.
