Abstract

Objective: To assess trends in hospitalization rates due to DM complications in the population of Macaé-RJ,
2011-2021. Methods: Ecological study of time series of hospitalization rates due to DM complications in the
population of Macaé-RJ in 2011-2021. Data was obtained through SIH/SUS, from the Datasus platform.
Joinpoint regression models were used to estimate the trend in the hospitalization rate. Results: The rates of
hospitalizations for DM complications per year, in general, showed a higher peak in 2016 and lower rate in the
year 2020. In the period between 2017 and 2021, there was a significant downward trend of -19, 71 % (CI
-36.71; -9.73) of hospitalization rates for DM complications. Conclusion: There was an increase in
hospitalization rates from the year 2011 to 2016 and a sharp reduction in rates during the pandemic, which
may be due to underreporting in the hospitalization registry.
