Health conditions of rural-riverside elderly people in the Amazon: an integrative literature review

This study aims to describe factors that influence the health conditions of the rural-riverside elderly population, based on the understanding of scientific evidence already obtained. Searches were carried out through the Virtual Health Library (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and National Library of Medicine (PubMed), using the descriptors “elderly health”, “aging” and “Amazon”. A sample of nine articles was reached, whose analysis was expressed in three categories: determining factors and socioeconomic conditions in rural-riverside old age; obstacles in the supply, access and use of health services in the rural-riverside Amazonian context; and environmental and historical-cultural influences on aging in the Amazon. Of the 283 articles initially identified, nine national publications were included. Most studies were observational, descriptive, with a quantitative approach; published in journals classified in the top extract of Qualis. Most focus on the investigation of data related to living conditions and gerontological clinical data. The results allowed us to conclude that the health conditions of elderly people within the Amazonian context are marked by several vulnerabilities resulting from geographic and social isolation, as well as low financial acquisition, low educational levels and distance from social and health resources.
