Teamwork through breastfeeding promotion: building a guide for Primary Health Care professionals.

Introduction: Teamwork is a central element of Primary Health Care (PHC). Characterized by integration and collaboration among professionals from different fields, interprofessionality is one of the models of teamwork. However, challenges such as fragmented care and the lack of coordination among professionals hinder its implementation. The promotion of human breastfeeding emerges as an example, highlighting both the potential and the obstacles of interprofessional work, and reinforcing the need to systematize information and guide practices through the development of a support guide for professionals. Objective: To understand the interactions among professionals of the Family Health Teams in the context of human breastfeeding promotion and how these interactions approach interprofessional practices, supporting the development of a guide for PHC. Method: This qualitative exploratory study, conducted in a Primary Health Unit in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, sought to understand the interactions between professionals of the Family Health and eMulti Teams in the promotion of human breastfeeding. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were used as data collection techniques, and thematic content analysis guided the interpretation of results. The systematization of these findings made it possible to identify essential elements for the development of a support guide for professionals in PHC. Results: Four central themes emerged from the interviews. Participant observation revealed that exchanges related to human breastfeeding occur mainly during team meetings and in the PROOMI group. The degree of integration among professionals fluctuates, with the oral health team facing greater difficulties. Despite ongoing efforts, barriers persist, compromising effective collaboration, and these findings provided the basis for defining the content and recommendations included in the guide developed to support PHC practices. Conclusion: There is a complex network of interactions among professionals within the Family Health Strategy regarding the promotion of human breast-feeding. Despite efforts toward interprofessional collaboration, barriers remain that compromise effective collaboration among professionals. The research culminated in the collaborative creation of a Human Breastfeeding Guide, aimed at facilitating access to information and its application by Primary Health Care professionals.
