Abstract

The objective study evaluates the influence of speech therapy changes on the social and psychological aspects of elderly people. This is an analytical, descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, quantitative study. It was carried out at the Ceuma University School Clinic (Clínica Ana Lúcia Chaves Fecury), in the city of São Luís, in the state of Maranhão. The sample had 20 elderly people over 60 years of age, 10 male and 10 female. Collection took place between the months of February and March 2020. A semi-structured questionnaire was used that investigated the following aspects: hearing impairment, vocal impairment, swallowing, social aspects and language impairment. As results: 60% (13) feel a lack of memory, 65% (13) forgetfulness, 35% (7) repeating words, 45% (9) forgetting the name of objects and 10% (2) are embarrassed due to your talk; 38% (6) feeling of food stuck in the throat, 34% (5) thrown during meals and 28% (4) embarrassed about eating in public places. Environmental conditions affected the quality of life of elderly people, mainly in relation to psychological and social conditions.
